Great Design - Not Great for Cooking
Coleman did a great job designing the look and feel of this grill. It's sleek, portable, looks great and folds up nicely. If you take pride in grilling you may be disappointed though when you turn on the heat and try to deliver your signature burgers to the party. Instead of strips of propane burners found on most gas grills, to achieve the low-profile design, they opted for two camp-stove-style round burners which deliver heat to a concentrated area. To get around this they engineered plates that deflect the heat. The burners are so close to the plates, not only do they not distribute the heat evenly, but they also trap great from dripping below and cause a real mess. Food over the burner plates cooks way faster than other parts of the grill.
I've had a Coleman camp stove for 30+ years and it's amazing. But the round burners work best on a camp stove, not a grill, for boiling water, a fry pan or putting a griddle across both. They just don't work on what is now supposed to be a grill.
Another downside to the sleek design is that if you do cook burgers, the grease that runs into the well below is very close to the flame. After just one use I had a grease fire while warming up the stove.
I wanted to like this grill but it's all form, little function. and very hard to grill food like you are used to on even the cheapest portable propane stoves.
